You probably have a pretty vivid memory of the day of your last exam. A mixture of despair, elation and relief as you realised that it was all over….
So you were probably also a little disappointed to learn that the IOSH Managing Safely training course is assessed by an exam.
Don’t worry, we’re here to put your mind at ease.
This article will cover how the course is assessed, the timeframe of assessment and the things you can do to make sure you pass IOSH Managing Safely!
How is IOSH Managing Safely Assessed?
The IOSH Managing Safely Course comprises a 3 day intensive taught component followed by 2 written assessments. The two assessments consist of a short examination and a risk assessment project conducted within the workplace.
- The IOSH Managing Safely Exam
- The IOSH Managing Safely Project
The examination is a multiple choice test paper, taken shortly after completion of the course based on the material you have learned over the full 3 days.
The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions which must be answered in 45 minutes.
The pass mark for the IOSH Managing Safely exam is 36/60.
60% – doesn’t sound so bad, right?
The IOSH Managing Safely risk assessment project is the second part of the assessment. This must be completed within 2 weeks of the examination.
This practical assessment involves assessing four potential health and safety hazards in your own workplace in 2 hours. The pass mark is 23/38, or roughly 60%.
Once you’ve passed both assessments (we know you will!), you’ll be presented with your IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.
What content will be assessed in the IOSH Managing Safely Exam?
The IOSH Managing Safely Exam will assess your knowledge of all 7 of the course modules. The course content is as follows:
- Introducing managing safely
- Assessing risks
- Controlling risks
- Understanding responsibilities
- Understanding hazards
- Investigating incidents
- Measuring performance
As this is a 3-day intensive course, things will move pretty quickly. That means there’ll be no time for scratching lewd images onto the desks (though we’re sure you’re all past that stage anyway)
How difficult is the IOSH Managing Safely Exam?
IOSH Managing Safely is a level 2 course, designed for managers, supervisors and team leaders. We don’t expect you to have prior knowledge of health and safety, though you should be able to write clearly and coherently in English.
Each training provider supplies their own course materials and resources, though the quality can vary from one provider to the next. At Safety Training Scotland, all of our materials are high quality and approved by IOSH. We’re also always on hand should you have any questions. As long as you can dedicate some time for studying, you should be able to pass the course with no issues!
How to pass IOSH Managing Safely
We hope you’ve got your flash cards at the ready! That’s right, there’s plenty to revise for this exam.
A couple of tips:
We all remember those late-night, panic-fuelled revision sessions as a student. We’ve all been frustrated as our caffeine-addled brains bungled the simplest of tasks – removing the foil lid from yet another tub of pot-noodle.
Let’s leave that in the past.
If you cover what you learned at the end of each day you should already be in a good position to sit the exam.
Take regular breaks
Don’t sit down for hours on end. As little as 20 minutes of mild to moderate physical activity can improve your memory and get your brain fired up before the exam. So go on, take a stroll…
Make it fun!
Post-it notes, coloured pens, mnemonics – remember those?
Of course, the science and art of revision has moved on considerably in recent years…
Research says aromatherapy can also be a great way to get your brain primed for revision. We’ve heard Rosemary is pretty good!
It is just an exam at the end of the day. We’ve been teaching this course for years and the pass rates have been exceptional, so there’s no reason why you can’t do it too.
Where will I take my IOSH Managing Safely Exam?
You will take the IOSH Managing Safely Exam at the end of the course, on the third and final day, in your chosen classroom (either off-site or in-house).
When do I get my results?
You will usually hear back from us a few weeks after you have both taken the IOSH exam and completed your risk assessment project.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an IOSH certificate within a few weeks. This will be printed by IOSH and countersigned by Safety Training Scotland.
Congratulations, you’ve passed the IOSH Managing Safely Exam.
The world is your oyster. The sky’s the limit…
Well, at the very least you’ll be well equipped with your new health and safety knowledge to implement a new, sustainable health and safety management strategy in the workplace.
