There’s just the small obstacle of a one-day course (6 hours study time) with a short test at the end. If you’re a glass half full kind of person, look at it as a day out of the office!
This article will outline when the refresher should be done, by whom and why it should be completed, and how much it costs. We’ll also take a look at the key parts included in the course content and how the exam works to make sure you pass with flying colours and get your refresher certificate!
When should the refresher be done?

What will the Refresher Course be like?
For starters, you’ll be glad to hear that the refresher course has condensed all the study content into 1 day rather than 3.
The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Course is based on the Plan, Do, Check and Act health & safety management system. To give managers a practical approach to learning, and to ensure managers fully understand their roles and responsibilities, the course is split into six different modules:
- Module 1: Thinking Back – on why managing safely is important in the workplace and the key reasons for this.
- Module 2: Leadership – The importance of leadership and how it shapes a positive safety culture.
- Module 3: Plan – What requirements should be included when planning a safety and health policy.
- Module 4: Do – Risk profiling through a risk assessment exercise followed by sharing your findings and the health & safety plan.
- Module 5: Check – Measuring if the health and safety plan being used is working and how effective it is.
- Module 6: Act – The importance of reviewing performance and continual improvement.
If you look at the refresher course as an accredited boost of what you already know, it is a welcome replenishment of updated health and safety issues.
What Does the Exam Look like now?
And breathe. If you thought the assessment was as gruelling as your first IOSH Managing Safely course you’ll be pleased to hear that you only have to sit one short exam.
To pass the exam, you’ve got to get at least 20 marks out of a possible 32. In percentage terms, you’re looking at a pass rate of 62.5%.
The exam questions aren’t designed to trick you or throw you off, instead, they’re there to genuinely test your knowledge of health and safety in the workplace.
You will be given 30 minutes to answer the 21 questions in a variety of formats including true/false, multiple-choice, open questions and short answers. The questions are worth anything between 1 – 5 marks.
